1/2-1 cup sugar
1/4 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp nutmeg
1/4 tsp salt
1 1/2 cups soft bread crumbs
3 cups sliced or chopped apples
1/4 cup water
3 tbsp butter
Juice and grated rind of 1 lemon


Mix sugar, spices, and salt. Grease a 1 1/2 quart casserole
Pour in a third of the crumbs, then half of the apples
Sprinkle with half of the sugar mixture. Repeat
Mix water, lemon juice and rind; pour over. Put on remaining crumbs and
dot with butter
Cover and bake in moderate oven about 350 degrees F for 1 3/4 hours.


Rhubarb, peaches, pineapple, bananas, or cherries may be used instead of
apples. Also can substitute 2 1/2 cup applesauce for apples.
